Introduction

"How can I be bigger, faster, leaner and stronger?" Purported answers to this question, with photographic "proof" have appeared in hundreds of magazines, thousands of Web pages with billions of dollars spent. Many people find it difficult to resist messages that promise leaner bodies, bigger muscles and better stamina from the contents of a bottle or pill and are willing to risk their health to look "buff."

It is estimated that Americans currently spend almost 2 billion dollars a year on substances claiming to improve strength, stamina, sexual appeal, and overall health. Substances include:

  • Protein powders and amino acids
  • Creatine
  • DHEA (dehydroepiandosterone)
  • Power drinks & energy bars

Questions to ask include:

  • Do any of these supplements really work as claimed?
  • Are they safe?
  • Are they really worth buying?
